Router vs Modem

Router and Modem are two terms that are often used interchangeably but have entirely different roles to fulfil. A

modem

is an inter-networking device that establishes and maintains the connection with the ISP and converts the signal to and from the router. A

router, on the other hand,

is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. It directs data in a network, passes them between a device (computer, mobile, laptop etc.) and the modem. A modem can work without a router, but a router cannot connect to the internet without a modem. Furthermore, a modem can only connect to one device – either a router or a PC; while a router can connect to multiple devices in a network.

FUP (Fair Usage Policy) is a set of rules that are typically applied by an internet service provider, which restricts the ways in which their network is used.
